A wall with the space for a sign marked Elevation of a coursed stone wall seen through a camera frame, with a dashed rectangle marking where a 450 by 150 millimetre house sign would go, and dimension lines along its top and side. SIGN HERE 450 mm 150
Rough is fineA phone photo of the wall with the space paced out tells me most of what I need to quote a sign.

Every stone I cut starts with a few lines from you. Tell me what it should say and where it is going, and within five working days I'll send back a price and a first thought on the layout.

There is no form and no phone line. This one address reaches me at the bench in the old cart shed outside Kilkenny, between drawing letters and cutting them.

What to Put in Your First Message

Five things let me quote properly the first time. If you only have two of them, write anyway and we'll fill the gaps between us.

  1. The wordingExactly as you'd like it to read, with line breaks if you have a feeling for them. Irish, English or both on the one stone.
  2. A rough sizeMeasured with a tape or paced out. For a sign, the space on the wall or gatepost. For a memorial, the plot or the stone a name is being added to.
  3. The stone, if you know itBlue-grey slate, Kilkenny limestone or Irish sandstone. Unsure is a perfectly good answer, and I'll suggest one for the light and the wall.
  4. A photo of where it's goingThe wall, the pier or the grave, taken from a few steps back, with a door or a kerb in the frame for scale.
  5. The town it's going toSo I can say straight away whether it's a fixing visit within 80 km of Kilkenny or a courier parcel.

For a headstone, the name of the cemetery and the date of the burial help too. The grave owner's written consent comes later, and I look after the cemetery paperwork from there.

Where
The 80 km fixing radius around Kilkenny A rust-ringed circle centred on Kilkenny, with a dimension line marking an 80 kilometre radius and the counties of Laois, Carlow, Wexford, Waterford and Tipperary placed roughly where they lie. 80 KM KILKENNY LAOIS CARLOW WEXFORD WATERFORD TIPPERARY
Fixing radiusMemorials are fixed within 80 km of the workshop. County positions are drawn roughly, not to scale.

Kilkenny, and a Morning's Drive Around It

The workshop is a converted cart shed outside Kilkenny town. Visits are arranged by email, so the samples are out and the chisels are down when you arrive.

House signs, numbers and plaques travel by courier anywhere in Ireland and Britain, ready to fix on hidden stainless pins. If you're near enough, I'll fix them myself.

Headstones and ledger stones I fix in person, on a proper foundation, nearly always within a morning's drive of the bench. That is where close to four hundred memorials have gone since 2010.

The winter note

A Note on Winter

I close the workshop from 20 December to 12 January every year. The limestone sulks in the frost and so do I, and those three weeks are when I draw new alphabets by the stove for the year ahead.

Write to me whenever suits you. I'll answer everything on the 13th, in the order it arrived.
