What Things Cost

Each price here includes the full-size drawing of your lettering, one complete redraw, and a painted or plain finish. Nothing is cut until you have seen the letters taped up at the size they will be in stone.

Gold leaf, courier, extra letters and travel beyond 80 km of Kilkenny sit on top, and they are listed line by line under Extras.

Names and Numbers for the Wall

Slate holds the sharpest edge of the three stones, so it suits small letters and numbers read from the gate. Kilkenny limestone is the local stone, warmer and a little softer, and handsome left plain. Every sign is drawn out for its own wall, from the photo you send.

Plaques for Openings and Anniversaries

For parish groups, schools and community halls marking a date that matters to a place. Up to 60 letters on a 400 x 300 mm slate. Where the price falls between €620 and €850 depends on how the words sit and whether the plaque carries a cut border.

Headstones and Ledger Stones

I take on about 30 memorials a year, each drawn for the family and the cemetery it is going to. Making takes 4 to 6 months, which usually sits inside the 6 months the ground needs to settle after a burial. Autumn bookings often run into the following spring.

Extras, Priced Line by Line

Gold leaf, more letters than a size allows, a second change of mind on the drawing, and the road beyond 80 km. These sit on top of the prices above, and each one is a separate line on your quote.

How Long Each Kind Takes

Counted from the day you approve the full-size drawing. I don't promise any memorial in under 8 weeks, and I won't rush the letters to meet a date.

  • House signs and numbers 5-7 weeks

Then courier or collection from the workshop by arrangement.

  • Plaques 6-8 weeks

Tell me early if there is an opening day to work back from.

  • Headstones and ledgers 4-6 months

Never fixed sooner than 6 months after a burial, so the ground can settle.

What I Won't Cut, at Any Price

Eight requests I say no to every time, so neither of us loses a week on a quote that was never going to happen.

  • Polished black granite, or any mirror-polished stone
  • Sandblasted, laser-etched or machine-routed letters
  • Photographs, portraits or ceramic inserts set in stone
  • Memorials promised in under 8 weeks
  • Copying another carver's design or alphabet line for line
  • Resin, composite or reconstituted stone
  • Hearts, books or open bibles cut from a template
  • Re-lettering over another maker's machine-cut inscription
